An Arizona State University parking garage will soon be the home of a new drive-thru art museum.

The exhibition is called "designspace: a new sensory drive-thru experience" tickets are on sale at 10 a.m. Monday, March 22. Showtimes are 7, 8 and 9 p.m. Tickets are $40 per car.

The mile-long show of lights runs April 9-25 and takes over the Packard Drive parking garage located at Sixth Street & Packard Drive in Tempe.

ASU's vice president of cultural affairs, Colleen Jennings-Roggensack said she wants families to experience a show they've never seen before.

"I want to take them out of this world," she said. "I want to take them out of this world where we're wearing masks and we're shut-in, to a world where their imagination can run wild. I just love them to go on this terrestrial journey with me."

Renowned light artists are behind 'designspace'

The show features dozens of light installations by ASU students and renowned HYBYCOZO sculptural artists Yelena Filipchuk and Serge Beaulieu, whose work has been shown at Coachella, Burning Man and the Smithsonian.

HYBYCOZO stands for Hyperspace Bypass Construction Zone and is a series of large-scale illuminated geometric artworks.

There will also be ASU dancers incorporated through the experience.

Being a show of lights, showtimes begin after sunset.

"This is really taking you on an experience into space," said Jennings-Roggensack.

"One of the things about theater is that we go on journeys together and that's what we miss about not being in the theater so this is a journey we can take together and it's for the whole family."

'Designspace' is 'of the moment'

The show is presented in partnership with ASU Gammage and visual design company Lightswitch which has produced lighting projects including for Disney, violinist Lindsey Stirling, Nintendo and Imagine Dragons.

“Designspace is truly 'of the moment," John Featherstone, partner & principal at Lightswitch, said.

"As many ASU Herberger Institute students were unable to practice their craft due to COVID-19 restrictions, industry professionals were unemployed, and millions of dollars of production technology was sitting idle. There seemed an opportunity to find advantage in these circumstances and create a truly new kind of experiential creative project.”
